Residue by Ken Walker
She wanders in
glorious presence,
a stone path through luscious greenery.
Radiating
sunshine touches her crown.
Majestic
residue. The sweet essence of jasmine
perfumes the fibers of her robe
most pleasant. Here,
her gift wafts through the marketplace,
restoring
the brokenhearted and all who are lost find
The Way
back to the little garden from whence she came
Artist Note - "Quite a number of years ago, I was troubled by a recurring smoke-like odor emanating from my work clothes. I was absolutely vexed because I don't smoke and hadn't been around anyone that had been smoking. After several months of this, I got into my car after working on my laptop at Starbucks for several hours (something I often did) and noticed this same smell only much more pungent. This time, rather than the obscure odor, I was able to identify the distinct layer of coffee. I realized that all the oils from the coffee beans being roasted had seeped into the fibers of my clothing, leaving a smokey residue that I carried around with me for part of the day until finally dissipating. Sure enough, on the days I spent little to no time at the coffee house, my clothes would be free of the scent, but spend enough time there, and I was sure to be bring Starbucks with me wherever I went for hours afterwards.
I think about the truth: People and places we come in contact leave a residue on our lives. Spend too much time around negativity and your life will reflect that essence to those around you. Likewise, investing time in positivity, and you tend to emanate an uplifting air of light to the world.
esus called us to be "light and salt" to the world, being an encouragement and hope to a wounded world by passing along the residue of His love - this we have because we carry the sweet presence of his love woven into the very fabric of our lives. The more we let him wash over us, the more scent is leaked out affecting those around us!
This poem is a reflection of this: She spends her time in the garden, soaking up the beauty of that place and then carrying it out into the marketplace. As she passes by, they can smell it on her, and are gently reminded of a better place, a quieter place and then, by the wafting fragrance she leaves behind, guided to this place where they too can enjoy the sweet fragrance of jasmine and enjoy the light reflecting off the flowers.
