My Little Fence by Ken Walker
My safe place,
the little fence next to the ballpark
cut off from the real world.
They can’t touch me,
Here I am
King of my world.
I eat
my sandwich -
peanut butter and jelly,
comfort of the gods.
In the distance
the tiny mortals
perform
for my entertainment.
How happy they seem
running around
free time to play,
unaware pain exists
beyond the chain links.
Vantage point,
I can see both playgrounds.
I am the watcher,
but I am uninvolved
The bell rings,
my soul unmoving from
this haven of rest.
I will be older one day
I will take this place with me
My safe place,
the little fence next to the ballpark
cut off from the real world.
They can’t touch me,
Here I am
King of my world
Artist Note - "This is based on a term paper I wrote in college about a vivid memory of my typical lunchtime - out to a far-off fence, my place of safety. I always struggled interacting with kids my own age - funny, I was an old soul then. I remember some wise people saying that one day the others would catch up to me. As I was finishing this up, I realized what this was and all the memories of that time came flooding back in. I was struck by the truth that in some way I haven't grown out of the fence, it just looks different now. My fence is my alone time in the car, or being in front of the laptop working on this project or the next. I think many of us have a fence like that, a place we hide from discomfort and pain. It's easier. But lonely. We miss out out learning and growing. Don't misunderstand, the fence has its place - it's season of efficacy. But leaving one's soul there too long, and life becomes hallow and stagnant. I am working on gathering as much of me from that place at the fence as I can and pushing myself to go outside my comfort zone, come down off my perch and join in a little more life, bad of good."

Bad or Good, you are protected by your Will To Live, so powerful, you create A wall of Art to keep you safe, against the demons. The inner demons! Exorcism comes eventually, Ken…you KNOW it. Your ART guarantees it. Keep creating. The light. it is shining bright through those pinholes.! When your vision, inner, is clear, those pinholes will join and become one HUGE canvas.
