Description
11th abstract in a series of stories, poems, and musings of this life we find ourselves in and was also inspired by both "Alice In Wonderland" by Luis Carroll and the jazz fusion song with the same title by Bill Bruford.
- "Alice did not feel encouraged to ask any more questions about it, so she turned to the Mock Turtle, and said 'What else had you to learn?' 'Well, there was Mystery,' the Mock Turtle replied, counting off the subjects on his flappers, 'Mystery, ancient and modern, with Seaography; then Drawling – the Drawling-master was an old conger-eel, that used to come once a week: he taught us Drawling, Stretching, and Fainting in Coils.' "
I sat awhile to think about this passage since it popped into my mind whilst finishing the painting. The song is one of my favorites, and I always wondered what "Fainting In Coils" was. Turns out, after some quick study, I found the answer to be rather simple: The author had an art teacher that taught "drawing, sketching, and painting in oils." Carroll was giving us a child's perspective in the conversation with Alice. Children have a way of distorting the world around them as they learn and grow. Children are naturally optimistic. The world they see is drastically different from adults. True, this isn't always a good thing, but sometimes, given the choice to facing the world's ugliness as adults, it is far better to take a step outside ourselves, reach deep into our inner child, and allow ourselves to re-frame our circumstances, just like children do. When I hurt, I can "drawl" on comfort and find rest. When I'm scared, I can "stretch" myself a picture of safety and security. And when the world tries to take away my hope, I can choose to flip the world on its end and faint in coils, adding colors around me to brighten my way.

VIVA - you've made my day. Speaking of favorites, this is one of mine - that got little fanfare - but I love it so. The color, texture, and inspiration both from ALICE and the BILL BRUFORD song. :)

I totally dig this! Not a very eloquent or elaborate comment. I'm drawn to yellow these days & I like the simple/complex composition.
